Gordon’s E-mail to Constituents

Message from Congressman Bart Gordon:

Dear Friend,

“I don’t pretend to have all the answers to all the questions that confront us but believe solutions can be found if we just use our common sense and work together.”

Those words are from my first newsletter to my new constituents as a young congressman in 1985.

I also pledged to support then-President Ronald Reagan when we agreed on policies and offer constructive alternatives when we disagreed.

Looking back on the past 26 years, the beliefs I brought with me from Tennessee to Congress are the same ones that I am leaving with. The best way to get things done is by working together with civility, cooperation and common sense. My experience has taught me no one has a monopoly on good ideas.

My best ideas have always come from home. Insight from Middle Tennesseans has helped to ensure workers keep their jobs while managing a family emergency, reform the student loan system to save taxpayers millions of dollars and help more students afford college, and put America on the path to energy independence.

As you may know, I announced my retirement from office last year, and will be leaving office on January 3rd. It has been an honor to serve you in Congress.

Throughout the past 26 years, your thoughtful advice has provided inspiration and guided my every decision. It is my hope that you will continue to stay engaged in the work of Congress, and stay in touch with Congressman-elect Diane Black. The same number you have used to share your good ideas with me can be used to reach her office beginning on January 3rd.
